Chinese tech giants Tencent and Alibaba filed the highest number of patent applications for blockchain solutions in 2019. In total, they account for more than 20% of the total number of applications filed last year.

According to the study by analyst Stephen Zheng and published in The Block, Tencent and its affiliates filed 718 applications for patents for blockchain solutions in 2019, while the Alibaba Group filed 470 applications. In total, more than 5,800 applications were submitted for blockchain solutions around the world. Thus, Tencent and Alibaba account for more than 20% of the total number of applications filed in the world in 2019.

Tencent and Alibaba are followed by other Chinese companies, WeBank, Ruize Technology and Ant Financial. In total, Chinese companies account for 63% of filed patent applications for blockchain solutions in 2019. They are followed by companies from the United States.

However, it is worth noting that only 3% of 5,800 filed applications were approved in 2019.
