Argentinian president Mauricio Macri posted on his official Facebook page a picture of himself with Sir Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Group. While bitcoin was mentioned in the caption and attracted attention of the community, the president’s position towards the cryptocurrency remains unclear.

The photo of Sir Branson and President Macri posted on 22 January 2016 was accompanied by a short introduction of Branson and his work, as well as by a summary of their talk and a justification of its importance:

“What they spoke about: Branson presented a drug control programme. Moreover, he expressed great interest in investing in Argentina and will visit the country this year.

Why the meeting was important: The president was very interested in the conversation, since Branson, in addition to demonstrating entrepreneurship in areas related to new technologies, such as for instance space flight and the use of bitcoin, is also engaged in humanitarian issues.”

The picture provoked quite a stir among the Facebook community with more than 55,600 likes and 2k comments, some of which interpreted its caption as an indication that Macri and Branson have indeed discussed bitcoin:

“Omg!! a president talking about bitcoin!! It is like a dream. Congrats, Argentina,” wrote the user Flavia Bley.

Nevertheless, some users noticed once again that, while everyone assumes Macri’s support for the digital currency, the Argentinian president has not yet stated clearly his position:

“How ingenious it would be to talk about bitcoins in Argentina and to leave the dollar aside… Very visionary, hopefully he will specify something,” commented user Emanuel Mora.

As CoinFox wrote earlier, Macri is known to have supported in his capacity of mayor of Buenos Aires the First Latin American Forum on Virtual Currencies in July 2015. Last May Branson invited a number of prominent figures in the world of digital currency to his private island in order to discuss blockchain.
