Wargaming, the creator of the hit games World of Tanks, World of Warplanes and World of Warships, has started accepting bitcoin in the US.

The news first appeared on the popular World of Warships website.

“We’re pleased to announce that tankers, pilots or commanders in the U.S. have a new way to pay for Premium vehicles and Gold/Doubloons -- Bitcoin! Effectively immediately, you’ll be able to make simple, safe and convenient purchases from any Bitcoin wallet through our partner BitPay.”

The payment processor BitPay confirmed the information on its corporate blog.

“Now players in the United States can use bitcoin to get the virtual gold that serves as Wargaming's currency for in-game power-ups in World of Tanks, World of Warships, and World of Warplanes.”

Wargaming is a Cyprus-based company specialising in massively-multiplayer online (MMO) strategy games. It began as a small developers’ team in Belarus, but reached the international audience with the hugely popular World of Tanks and pressed the success with other titles, now having over 15 products in the roster. The declared revenue of the company in 2012 was nearly €218 million while net income equalled €6.1 million.

As of October 2015 the company claimed more than 150 million of registered players in its three main projects. It is not clear, though, how many of those users are currently active.

Bitcoin is gaining momentum among the MMO gaming companies and servers. Minecraft, another popular online franchise, claims more than 22 million players, who bought the registered version. Last summer the Minecraft server PlayMC introduced an option to earn bitcoins while playing a game.
