The US-based crypto exchange Coinbase received 4,227 requests from government agencies around the world, in which they asked Coinbase to disclose information on client accounts. Most of them came from the USA, UK and Germany.

Coinbase published its second Transparency Report, covering the period from July 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020. According to it, there were a total of 4,227 requests in 2020, 54% of those requests made during the time period covered by this report. 2,313 requests were received in the second half of the year. Most of them were related to criminal investigations. They accounted for over 95% of all disclosure requirements.

90% of requests came from the the US, UK, and Germany. The FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and HSI (Homeland Security Investigations) comprise the majority of US law enforcement information requests with a share at approximately 50.9%. Coinbase is also often required by the IRS to disclose customer information.

The report also notes an increase in requests from government agencies in France. In six months, their number increased by 20%, to 69.
