The website was blocked around 10:00 GMT on January 13th without advance notice. According to local media, the website was blocked by order of the court in Nevyansk, a town in the Ural Mountains.

In addition to bitcoin.org, Russian authorities blocked the web encyclopedia bitcoin.it, BTCsec.com (a popular Russian bitcoin forum), and Indocoin.com.

Coinfox.info found the court case on the website of the regulator, Roskomnadzor. The case was heard in the city of Nevyansk, the court decision was reached last August, and the supervision agency decided to block it around 10:00 GMT today. Case documents are not accessible through the Internet for unknown reasons.

Users of the blocked websites are discussing their next steps. "It's time for a change of domain", wrote one of the administrators of BTCsec.com in a private discussion on the forum. Coinspot.ru changed its domain last year and will probably benefit the most from the current situation.

Bitcoin.org is one of the central websites of the bitcoin community. It is supported and sponsored by the Bitcoin Foundation and is used by many other resources as an encyclopedia of bitcoin knowledge. The website has a Russian-language version.
